Wilderness Leadership Institute (WLI) can lead you to new experiences and new heights as you learn the skills necessary to travel safely and competently through mountain environments. WLI mountaineering courses cover a comprehensive skills progression, winter camping, snow safety, ice climbing, glacier travel and route finding are some of the many aspect of mountaineering taught through our programs and expeditions. Intro to Winter Camping & Travel (2-Day) $260

In this course students will learn the many skills of winter camp craft and backcountry travel. Route founding, snow shelters, clothing and sleeping systems, snow shoeing and cooking will be explored as students learn to thrive in a harsh and magical landscape. Snow Safety $130

This introductory course will introduce students to avalanche awareness and backcountry hazards. Through snow pack stability tests, local forecasting and avalanche education, WLI instructors will teach you the skills to minimize you exposure to backcountry risks. Snow Climbing & Anchors (2-Day) $260

Traveling on snow takes many forms, from crossing passes to climbing peaks. Knowing how to effectively use an ice axe, crampons and a variety of anchoring and belay methods is paramount to efficient mountain travel in a variety of snow conditions. Alpine Rock Climbing (2-Day) $260

Climbing beautiful granite peaks high in the backcountry can be one of the most rewarding days you will ever spend in the mountains. Alpine Ice Climbing (2-Day) $260

Being an effective mountaineer means moving well on Alpine ice and old snow fields. Students will learn a variety of ice axe and crampon techniques, how to manage bergschrunds, different belay methods and the use of ice protection. Contact the WLI office for course information and dates.


Glacier Travel & Crevasse Rescue (3-Day) $390

Crevasse rescue skills are must know for all mountaineers venturing into glaciers. In this course students will learn how to effectively travel in rope teams, deal with various rescue scenarios and build C-pulley and Z-pulley raising systems. Beginning Water Ice Climbing $170

Lean how to ice climb with the confidence of a top rope and the professional direction of a WLI instructor. This course will introduce the basic techniques needed to climb vertical water ice. Intermediate Water Ice Climbing $190

Learn to climb with grace and efficiency. WLI instructors will analyze all aspects of your climbing, helping you to refine techniques and learn new skills.
