The American Canoe Association (ACA) is a national nonprofit organization serving the broader paddling public by providing education related to all aspects of paddling; stewardship support to help protect paddling environments; and sanctioning of programs and events to promote paddle sports competition and recreation.


ACA Coastal Kayak Day-Trip Leader Certification:

The American Canoe Association (ACA) offers the Coastal Kayak Day-Trip Leader (CK DTL) certification to intermediate paddlers who have an interest in guiding beginning kayakers in temperate waters. This course is intended to provide the skills and training necessary for an adult leader possessing foundational paddling skills to lead day-trips for participants with beginner level paddling skills, in gentle conditions.

This course will introduce students to the skills necessary to lead novice boaters. Emphasis will be placed on trip leading, safety education and rescue. Students will lean to manage beginning paddlers in winds up to 10 kts, waves 1 foot and smaller and currents of 2 kts.

16 hours minimum

Prerequisites/Previous Experience

Students should be 18 or older and have taken a basic Coastal Kayak course or assessment (e.g. ACA Essentials of Kayak Touring or Level 2 Assessment) or have equivalent skills and experience.

Course Objectives

Successful participants should be able to do the following:

Students will be assessed in solo and/or tandem kayaks with deck lines and flotation fore and aft. Spray skirts will be used for at least part of the course.
